I originally trained as a Registered General Nurse in London within the University College of London Hospital group. After completing my RGN training in 1992, I spent the next 17 years working in both the private sector and within the NHS, mainly in the area of Neurological Intensive Care having gained further specialist training. The last 11 years of my career as a general nurse were spent working at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London prior to leaving the UK in 2009 to live in Switzerland. As no longer Registered as a nurse due to time away from the UK, since returning in 2016 I have continued to provide home Care to various clients in the community and have recent CRB check cert.
Having always had an interest in approaching health and well-being from a holistic viewpoint, it was during my time at the National Hospital for Neurology in 2008 that I first took part in a Reiki course with a colleague under the guidance of Sunayana Clark who now runs Feel Good Treatments in London and began offering this to some of the medical intensive care patients who were awake and recovering from long term conditions such as Guillain Barre syndrome. This proved to be a great adjunct to the medical treatment that these patients were receiving, helping to bring a sense of serenity and acceptance despite the pain and discomfort being caused by the disease process. Since that time, Reiki and other forms of alternative therapy have continued to gain popularity. During my time in Switzerland, aside from setting up and running a business as a pet sitter, I continued to use Reiki and continue my practise with this mode of healing. I returned to the UK in 2013 to take part in level one and level two Reiki healing courses with Sunayana again. I continued to build on my Reiki Practise, becoming a Reiki Master in 2014 with Jaqueline Teoh of Living Resonance and continuing to practise on a regular basis.
After returning to the UK in 2016 I began incorporating sound techniques alongside Reiki after discovering the seemingly magical and transformative power of sound and frequency and began studying all types of sound healing modalities, as have been used throughout the ages. I hired a space at the Olive Tree Therapy Rooms, Haslemere for a short period of time before discontinuing to allow more time to focus on sound healing course work and studies. As part of my sound healing training journey, in 2018 I attended a 5 day intensive on site module with The Sound Healing Academy as part of a very in depth sound healing training course. During the on site section of the course I gained more hands-on practical experience in delivering sound therapy using all kinds of instruments. Perhaps most importantly though, I was able to experience the effects and benefits for myself which up until that time had been focused on applying the techniques on others. During this part of the course, I found myself experiencing feelings of peace and serenity at a much faster rate than any amount of meditation previously carried out. I also experienced the transformative effects that continued long after the sound sessions had taken place. I continue to use hand chimes, Tibetan bowls, crystal singing bowls, gongs, drums, tuning forks and various other instruments to facilitate relaxation, balance and healing within the energy field of myself and others. I continue to update my skills by attending regular shorter courses which focus on particular instruments and techniques. Most recently I spent the day learning the art of gong therapy in more depth and techniques relating to playing for groups of people with experienced practitioner Martin Fearn. Drumming for healing techniques is another of the courses recently attended. I plan to attend further gong training in July. I currently work from home providing treatments on a one to one basis but am in search of an external healing space that will be suitable for working and storing my sound healing equipment which is rapidly expanding and on a permanent basis. I have experimented on using sound on animals on a few occasions. Initially unsure as to how they would react in view of their highly acute levels of hearing so far I've noticed high levels of receptivity. Applying sound therapy techniques on animals may be an area of consideration in the future.
Sound therapy and its application is a fascinating subject and has tended perhaps to be discounted as not based on science or a valid form of therapy in relatively recent history. Advances in science over the past several decades have in fact, in part been able to provide more scientific explanations as to the mechanisms and benefits of therapies such as these, validating sound therapy as a valuable, important and much needed form of therapy.
Sound Healing provides a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern science. An element of mysticism may always remain as to why sound affects us in such profound ways and provides so many healing benefits. One thing that scientific studies have been able to demonstrate though is that it works and it works on a cellular level.
As we collectively begin to reconnect with the wisdoms of the past so too can we do this on an individual basis and its an exciting time to be involved!
